This may be old news to some PPC users, but the 6315 may be the first device for many, and the following was news to me about installing programs to your SD card. I always wondered why, when installing nearly all of my programs to the SD card that much of my main memory was being used. I found the answer today in another forum and thought it would be useful here to new and maybe us seasoned users as well.
Have you ever tried to install apps on your storage card only to find out that your app folders are written to the root folder of the storage card? I have tons of folders on the root drive of my folder. I always wanted to have everything install under the "Program Files" folder on the storage card. Now thanks to a thread on Brighthand I can do it.
I am going to supply the instructions as I have done it. But to give the author credit I will supply the link to the thread as well.
1. On AS on the desktop, goto Tools -> Add/Remove programs. Uncheckthe "install program into the default installation folder" option.
2. Edit the registry on the PPC:
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Application Installer\
set fAskDest to '1'
3. Create the "Program Files" folder on the SD Card. If you have a "My Documents" folder on the root folder of the SD Card, make sure that you have the ignore_my_docs file in the root drive of the SD Card.
4. Install your app. When asked if you want to install in default location, select No. Then the option of where to install appears. Select SD Card from the dropdown. This will merely copy the install CAB over to the root drive of the SD Card. Once the copy is complete, a Save AS dialogue screen will appear on the PPC. Select the SD Card and select the folder "Program Files". The app will install to the \SD Card\Program Files folder.

Ascii stupid question, get a stupid Ansi.
Thanks for the tip! Just yesterday I was trying to install some Pharos maps to an SD card and it wouldn't work until I created a My Documents folder. I didn't do the rest of this, but I'll now give it a try.
This has been an amazing fix for me too. I've installed tons of apps now on the SD card with almost no impact on my main memory. My thinking is that it uses only the main memory to install reg settings and a shortcut.

I edited the registry as sugggested in this post so I could install my programs to the storage card instead of the main memory. The program works fine from its new location

Thank 's
he just released some memory space from Main Memory by having all programs run off from the SD card instead of Main Memory...this way VC has enough memory to start up and run without a glitch...you still have to run VC from Main Memory..that's what I found out the hard way !!!!!

It's never wise to put VC in storage because it takes the PPC a sec or two to recognise the storage card so you end up getting the location not found error message. Why not store it in the IPAQ file store

I can get it to work from the SD card..just that there is a lag while opening it...on the main memory, there is no lag time..its instant on...that's what I was referring to.....

I did uninstall VC and reinstall it to the storage card, along with a few other programs. It works fine from the storage card, but oddly, when I power the 6315 down and then turn it on, VC is not on the programs menu ( that doesn't surprise me) but it doesn't start with the PCC. When I do a soft reset it starts right up, telling me in the little robotic voice that it is on. The Jabra 250 works great too, when I turn it on the headphone icon appears and it works as advertised, except I have to key voice commander on from the handheld twice, two taps. First the activate tone sounds on the PPC, then it comes in through the headphone. It works pretty well when driving, I hit the button twice, say the name of the contact and I'm conected. To disconnect I tap the buton on the earpiece. Next call usually goes through on the first tap, if it is a while between calls it takes two again.
When all these little issues get ironed out this will be great, even with the issues, its pretty good.
