This is so GD stupid. Thanks for ruining what could have been an interesting thread. Might as well shutter this one and start a new one with some kind of a disclaimer so that br549 doesn't get confused again.
You've got great taste in music (and cereal) but your forum etiquette leaves something to be desired.
So show me where Sprint says they absolutely guarantee that there will NOT be any EVDO coverage that isn't listed on those maps.
Those maps aren't meant to be used in that fashion. They are only meant to show people where there might be coverage at some point in time. They are from Sprint's plan for an EVDO launch that began several months ago.
There are MANY people posting all over the net about areas they are currently getting EVDO. Places that aren't listed on those maps as having current coverage.
Again, you show me where Sprint says they explicitly guarantee that there is no EVDO coverage outside of what is listed as having current coverage on those maps. You do that, and your point is well taken. But for now, you are ASSUMING that to be the case, when in fact it is not.
The one who made the claim here was SPRINT. Sprint came out and said they now have the broadest EVDO coverage. Someone posted Sprint's latest claim, and you jumped all over them.
If anyone is going to question it, it should be:
1: People using Sprint EVDO who know it is not as good as they say it is.
2: verizon- claiming they actually have a better coverage area.
None of that has happened. Quite the contrary. So far the only person using Sprint EVDO that has posted in this thread actually agreed with Sprint's claim. And it just so happens that he is also using Verizon EVDO (both data cards, so apples to apples) so he would have an educated opinion on the matter. In many markets too.
Dan - You're right and I apologize for arguing. I had hoped that xenophon would've recognized that the point being made was that anyone can claim anything without a foundation, until they're challenged. Sorry if the challenge got out of hand.
Thread showing coverage areas not listed, as well as documenting the borders, by Sprint maybe?

Thanks dude... no hard feelings. Let's get back on topic!
My bosses ganked the EVDO cards (Sierra 580) a couple of months ago for themselves and the hacked 6600 method was less than satisfying. So rather than resorting to 1x I just haven't been using Vision at all (I'm stubborn like that)... looking forward to probing the coverage around here and will update when I've gotten a chance to do that.
To settle this argument I received my PPC-6700 today and got EVDO access way outside of the covereage listed as currently available in the Dallas area. As a matter of fact I am currently getting EVDO at the outer edges where the maps show as future EVDO service. So the maps listed on the sprint site ARE outdated.
Sprint's massive CDMA expansion on Nextel sites affect on EVDO coverage/capacity
According to the Sprint/Nextel application, Sprint now has over 24,000 cell sites and claims they will be adding 14,000 more by 2008 or about averaging 4,000 per year - apparently 1,000+ more by end of 2005. https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/a...64392058496989
It could be more difficult for Verizon to obtain more newly developed cell sites, having to go through community approvals, etc.
Verizon admits they are planning on only 75% of sites to EVDO because of inconsistencies in network. Verizon has a mix of 800/1900mhz towers and is avoiding putting EVDO on 800 sites because 800 has much less bandwidth capacity.
Sprint has all 1900mhz cellsites and they own the network backbone to the cellsites. They are apparently quickly converting more cellsites to EVDO daily with bold claims of being in more markets.

Cool!
Perhaps Sprint's claims aren't so far fetched afterall. Will be interesting to hear from more users.
For the record, no one questioned whether the maps were outdated. In fact, for 20 years, coverage maps have been woefully inadequate, so no one should be surprized.
Happy to hear of your good coverage, and it would be nice to determine if that coverage is in a 'test' pattern or has been finalized. Only continued use will tell.

This is indeed good news for all and specifically for people in the DFW area. I'm in Allen and would be curious to hear more specific location info that you were successful getting an EVDO signal if my area. Where exactly did you get the signal?
Looks like many are getting EVDO on their 6700s outside 'officially' mapped areas. The better question is, where isn't there EVDO? If over 50% of network is activated, perhaps Sprint's claim is reasonable.
Take this as a positive gesture in my point of view to get back to the Fn point. We are here ... to discuss EVDO and THE 6700... not otherwise stated...if you do state otherwise then start a new thread but this is to be on 6700 and EVDO and the Relationship between the two
btw i get Full EVDO reception in San Antonio Texas on my new sparkling 6700
Actually the thread is about Sprint's claim of EVDO coverage whatever device is used. All devices use the same signal.
Based on responses from 6700 and laptop card users, it looks like most are getting Sprint EVDO. In fact, I haven't heard from anyone not getting Sprint EVDO except for one 40 miles W of Chicago.

Anyone else only getting 1xRTT?
I still have 1xrtt here in central Kansas, but then that's not surprising, its Kansas, and worse, its central Kansas.
On the other hand, traveling east yesterday via Lawrence and environs at one point I got 973 but seemed to be mostly running around the 600 kb mark. Those areas are not marked as having EVDO but it is there and running.
Here in the central part of the state we consider ourselves lucky to not be having to communicate via two cans and a string!
With Rita breathing down its neck, Houston and vicinity may well be in the same boat.

According to this, Verizon is in 61 markets as of Aug 29. Both are probably adding markets weekly. Sprint claims 75 now and 100 markets by end of year.
got the 6700 yesterday and today I drove around a bit in the Dallas suburbs of Allen and Plano and I was getting EVDO everywhere. I was getting some shifting between 1xrtt and EV but that seems logical considering typical signal fluctuation.
Sprint is really playing their cards close to their vest and keeping EV low profile so they can open by hitting one out of the park. I have never seen a company keep such a good secret in a long time. Normally marketing is way in front of the actual product availability. Great job Sprint!

I live right at 75 & George Bush and I seem to be only on 1xrtt with my PPC-6700. I haven't had a speed test over 100 Kbit. How can I tell if the device is in EVDO range or not? Is there an icon that would identify it? Could my phone not be provisioned properly and I need to call Sprint?
