Need Help--Any Exchange/ActiveSync Gurus Out There?
I just set up ActiveSync on my PC which is a client to our WinServer 2003 box. I got the partnership done OK, and specified Exchange sync of calendar, e-mail, and contacts. The first sync was dog-slow (cpu maxxed out at 100%). I received an "invalid certificate" warning after the sync.
After rebooting with the 6700 disconnected. the PC runs fine until I connect--then everything slows to a crawl again. I think the problem may be related to the server settings (duh...). Specifically, I'm not sure how to configure the "Server Address" (the help file says to use server name).
All this is a ground-up install (there's nothing in there to really synch yet). I've tried ActiveSync 4.0 and 4.1 with identical results. Thoughts?
You are using Exchange 2003? You have Outlook Web Access? If you answer yes to both of these then the "server name" is the fully-qualified-domain-name of the OWA server.
webmail.whatever.com or some such.
Be aware: Your OWA server must have a SSL cert on it and the name of the cert must be the same as what you call it in the server name field.
If you don't have a cert/cant install one, there is a tool out there to work around this part.

The tablet reported a certificate problem (I hadn't chosen to trust the cert, so I viewed and installed it). The cert is from server.companyname.com and OWA worked fine.
"Servername" and "companyname" don't match (servername is eight alpha characters--the service tag number of the Dell box--and companyname is our external domain name).
I've tried both in the server name field in ActiveSync setup. The first was automatically stirpped down to "servername" only and reported an invalid cert. The second either reports a device timeout waiting for credentials (username, pw, domain?) or invalid cert. Regardless, all sync's are very slow (cpu usage 100% and remains so even after disconnecting the 6700).
Sorry for the long-windedness and being such an IT nOOb but I'm tearing my hair out here...
Are you sure your server uses SSL for OWA ? I have synced to exchange 03 without a cert ? Its not necessary to have to sync with AS. Also if you are not using SSL/Cert your server session will not authenticate. Try to sync without ssl in ActiveSync.

ive had similar problems. apparently thr 6700 ships missin sum important ssl certificates and for some reason this is my ONLY device that wont sync to my 2003 server without SSL. in my case i had to install 2 verisign certs on my 6700. im not IT guru so i cant help much in terms of.... terms but i kno i had to do tht. this is a known problem with 6700 tookme 3 hrs with microsoft windows mobile supprt and 300 bux to figure it out. hopefuly that might help narrow it own tho.
No way will I pay M$ tech support that much to get this working Hopefully whtrbt7 over on HoFo can get me going. If I can't make this work I'll simply dump the 6700 and get a K-Jam.
the directions I have seen pretty much everywhere for adding your certificate authority to the trusted sites is wrong. All you need to do is download it from <server>/certsrv, put it on your phone (you can even download if FROM your phones bowser), and then click on the damn thing in file explorer on your phone! you do NOT need to use that program from microsoft or elsewhere to import it and do NOT need to restart.
try going to https://<server> in pocket IE, and it shouldn't complain.
I was stuck on this for a few days myself and this guy's site helped me out, in exchange, I dropped him a few bucks thru paypal.com - you should do the same if it helps:
i duno wht programs u guys are referring to. but i basically found out what ssl certs my exchange server used. went to verisign downloaded the apprporiate ones and threw them on me device and opened them. tht was it. worked 100%. u really just need to find out what certs you need. ur IT folks should be able to tell u tht easily. its usuale verisign and/or one other whose name i cant remember off top. and while i can afford it no prob. screw payin microsoft. i was just desperate frustratd and annoyed. but whatever u do. stop thinkin bout that k jam. its terriible. i used one. looks similar. runs terrible. and its keyboard is trash!!! those small oval keys. ugh
I got Exchange ActiveSync working by exporting our server's root certificate and copying it to the storage card on the 6700, then installing it. Thanks everyone for your input--the problem was much harder to solve than it should have been for the following reason, which I still haven't tracked down...
Whenever I connect the 6700 via the USB cable, my PC slows to a crawl (100% cpu usage). I hear the normal two-tone sound of a USB device being connected (followed by the tinkling sound of the PPC connecting), then the sync proceeds very slowly (OTA works fine). If I unplug the 6700 (I hear the normal sound there, too) the cpu stays maxxed out until I reboot the PC.
This leads to a few questions:
1. While connected, a "Local Area Connection #2" appears in Win XP Connection Mgr. Is this normal? My brother's HP 4700 (ActiveSync 3.8 I believe) doesn't show this.
2. My brother's 4700 shows up in Device Manager as a "Windows CE USB Device". Mine only shows up under Network Adapters.
3. Could I install ActiveSync 4.1 over 4.0 without messing anything up?
4. Can I re-name the PPC without ActiveSync losing track of it?
Fixed! See the "Woot!..." thread. Thanks but I've wrapped this one up and going to enjoy a couple cold ones and some good acoustic rock at my favorite watering hole tonight. I've earned it

If the cert's on you PC use IE tools, internet options, content, certificates, trusted root certification authorities tab... Highlight the cert for your server and export it being sure to add a ".cer" extension. Use the other options at defaults. Put the file on your sd card, click it on the 6700 and follow instructions. Any q's just post back here.
Is there a way to clear the exchange settings in Activesync? I can't change my username or domain--the fields are blue. I can't enter "nothing" in the server field--the "next" is greyed out if I do that.
I'm tyring to start from scratch w/o a hard reset.
