If anyone has problem with ActiveSync 4 or 4.1 recently, you might find that the new XP patch KB902400 (got installed to my machine on Sunday 10/16/05) cause this.
After it install on my PC, I simply cannot sync data at all. After several hours, I finally found a posting in the activesync newsgroup saying that this patch causes the problem. Sure enough, once I remove it, I can sync now.
To remove the patch, pull up the 'Add or Remove Programs' app from XP Control Panel, check the 'Show updates' box on top, find the entry with KB902400, then remove it.
Hopefully my firewall can protect me from whatever this patch is for... I'd rather live with that than unable to sync my PPC
Forgot to add that if you remove this patch, make sure you change your XP Automatic Updates setting from automatically download to something else, otherwise it will download and install the patch again.
I change mine to notify me before download. This should works fine.
Hmmm, interesting and good find. I have the patch running on the machine I use to sync and I'm not having any sync issues. On the other hand I did have some about a week ago but can't really say if they started after the patch was installed. When it pitched a fit I just used that as an excuse to upgrade activesync to 4.1 and all was well again after that and has been since.
Might be interesting to know if 4.1 is a fix rather than un-installing a critical Win patch.
jeffreii, I looked to see if I still had the AS 4.1 upgrade exe so that I could send it to you but it looks like I deleted it already. Hopefully, someone else here can point you to a download locations.

I following the link to the next technet article, and it appears that the permissions on the relevant folder in the windows/registration folder were cleared.
Just an FYI: This was released as a critical MS patch as the vulnerability is highly publicized and easily exploitable. I am in charge of security patching at my work and this was so serious we had less than 24 hours to address it.
A better way to address this is to modify the DCOM permissions on your machine after applying the patch. Run dcomcnfg from a run prompt, click on component services, click on computers, then right click on My Computer. Click on COM Security, and edit the access and launch limits to 'allow' for 'everyone'.
