HOW TO: 6700 as wireless router / access point (SOCKS proxy)

There's been a lot of interest in using our phone as a wireless EVDO router, but I haven't seen a solution yet. While the best solution would be a WM5 app that is capable of NAT routing, this solution gets the job done for most apps.

Basically, we use a Java SOCKS proxy to route from WiFi to EVDO. There may be a WinCE SOCKS proxy, but I didn't look hard enough =)

Basic instructions:

1) Download/install Mysaifu (http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~dat/java.../index_en.html)

IIRC, there were no issues with this step. I installed to Storage Card (in case you were wondering whether that will work or not).

2) Download/install jsocks (http://jsocks.sourceforge.net)

Extract it somewhere on your PPC. I chose \Storage Card\Program Files\socks.

3) Edit the socks.properties file with your desired settings. I've attached my file to this message.

4) Add a link to the Start Menu -> Programs. I've attached my .lnk file.

4) Set up an ad-hoc WiFi network (tutorial: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ind...3&p=588&more=1) Make sure you set the WiFi network as it connecting to Work (and not the Internet)

5) Connect computer(s) and set up apps to use SOCKS proxy

Get your PPC IP (should be in the form of 169.254.x.x, it will remain the same for the life of your PPC I think). Then, for example in Firefox you can goto Settings/preferences and set the 169.254.x.x as the SOCKS proxy (on port 8080 in my socks.properties file).

Nice find!

I downloaded the zip file and found this in the "readme" doumentation:

"Requirements

In order to run these application you will need Java Virtual Machine which supports Java 1.1 or higher. I have tested it with jdk1.1.6 and jdk1.2.2 under Windows95 and on jdk1.1.5 under Solaris. Server application might be able to run even under java 1.0, but I haven't tested this."

Since it doesn't specify Mysaifu explicitly, only a Java 1.1 compatible runtime, I may give it a try later with the IBM Java runtime.

I've managed to get my laptop and pc connected, the java proxy server is running however the internet isn't working. Even if i try to nagivate to a page on the phone using internet explorer i get a fast error saying

"the page cannot be displayed or downlaoded because the connection was lost. check the connection and try again later."

On the laptop with the proxy settings set correctly with my phone's IP I get page cannot be displayed on everypage i attempt.

Any clues?

I am using your config file and followed the steps to the T

Oops, I forgot to mention make sure the WiFi network on the PPC is set so that it connects to work, and not the Internet. Pretty sure that should fix it..

that did fix the internet on the phone however there is no connectivity between internet explorer and the proxy. I looked in the console to see if there was any logs or request but nothing. Any ideas?

*edit*

I am 100% sure I have entered the correct ip into the proxy settings. I've even done a port scan on my laptop while connected to the phone and see that port 8080 is indeed open, but I still continue to get "cannot find server, this page cannot be displayed" errors. So close to working!

That's strange..

Let's stick with Firefox since I tested that (albeit I did so on Linux, but it should be the same code). So in Edit->Preferences->Connection Settings, I have everything blank except the SOCKS host to the IP, and the port to 8080 (and the Manual proxy configuration radio button selected).

Is that what you have when you're getting the connection reset?

has anyone got this working with rom ver 2.06.00

Infared, I followed the how to and cant seem to get it to work.

The PPC-6700 can browse the net (ev-do) connected. The java console opens and dumps some messages, but the laptop times out.

I can ping the 6700 from the my laptop and viceversa.

I am using FireFox on WinXP Pro SP2, I have the windows firewall turned off with Norton Anti virus 2005. I have tried with NAV disabled.

Any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Chris
