Anyone who says any phone release is delayed due to Verzions extensive "Testing" is full of it.
I agree and looking back at the original poster of this comment, he also states the 8 or 9 different reps have given him the same story. I really have no desire to question the integrity of someone I don't know at all. But doesn't that sound a little fishy to anyone else? When is the last time you got even two reps to agree to the same information. Just read this board, none of them hardly ever give the same story.
Which does go to show that if nothing else Verizon does know how to keep things close to the vest. In all actuallity I doubt that any specifc release date is know by anyone at this point, just a time frame. Specific information almost always leeks, and the lack of any consensus just says to me that no exact date has been set yet. However, I think some in Verizon do have a fairly good idea of "time frame." Now it's just a matter of divining which is the most reliable or sensible. I don't find a lot of sense in this post regardless of the posters veracity.
Originally posted by Marty I think HP got a lot of things right with this device like the 2 card slots and the integrated GPS, but I will not be considering it mainly because from the posted dimensions of the device, it appears it will be as wide or wider than the 6600. Also, after playing around with EV-DO, I definitely want that on my next phone. EDGE or 1xRTT just isn't going to cut it for me anymore, any phone that I am going to spend $600 on better support the latest and greatest, which right now is EV-DO.
Ms. Harrier was extremely helpful with the 6600 release and seemed to have accurate information when my verizon rep had never heard of it. Has anyone asked her about the i730? Is she still around?

I think she decided to retire after this group got finished with her
Well, it's Monday. I'm ready for some more unsubstantiated rumor and speculation. My fuel for the week.
I guess the latest rumor on the Treo 650 is for B2B release on Friday.

I was thinking the same thing... Didn't anybody find some obscure article on some 3rd world website giving us another "coming this week" news?
Originally posted by Marty From what I understand, there will be two version of the HP device, one with 2 card slots and no wifi and the other with wifi but only 1 card slot.
and probably one with camera and one without. ...and if Verizon has anything to say about it, they will all be the same price...
All, I forgot to mention that My VZW team including the Engineering Director in the east that got me the i730 said the phone would be released in May. They didn't mention a specific date, but they did imply that the May release date was to be to "Friends of the Family" release (i.e. high profile Corporate clients, fortunately like my company and me). The Engineering director also said that this phone was the easiest testing that they have ever done. His entire team found zero problems with the initial release of the OS. He said that never happens, so I don't think it will be testing issues to delay the release and I know Samsung wants the phone out to replace the i700. VZW engineers have nicknamed the i730 as the "Treo Killer".

Then what is it that is causing the delay? By the way what version of the i730 was he specifing that goes to "friends of the family"?
Guys... I posted the info I knew and I didn't need to be criticized and questioned. I posted what I know, including the fact that 8 or 9 reps said virtually the same thing. No need to authenticate what I'm saying, it's just a stupid rumor thread. Nonetheless, if you noted, sclevan said May will be release date for Corporate clients, which probably means our date will be at least 2 to 3 weeks after that. Folks, I think i'm gonna grab the 6600 w/cam and if the i730 drops, I'll sell my 6600 and grab it!
For what its worth Laker, as I said I really didn't want to question anyone's authenticity when I don't have a clue who you are, and I am just as clueless as the next guy when it comes to release dates. It's just amazing you were able to get the same answer from so many different reps. Those guys sure seem to all have their own little perspective and opinions. Much like everyone here.
If I was a Verizon executive I'd be a little concerned about how badass this i730 is cracking up to be. If it's really a "treo killer" and most likely going to waste the xv6600 along with it, there's no question I would delay it till June and still wonder if I released it too early.
Flame me if you want, but this happens all the time with new product releases. Sure, if you release the next generation it will sell like hotcakes, and everyone keeps saying I'm a big jackass because "the goal of every company is to sell a bunch of product."
But take the 1-2 year view with me for a sec. If you KNOW there's nothing in the pipeline for the next twelve to eighteen months that will compete with the i730, and you know that once you release it you'll either kill demand for the Treo and 6600 or have to drop their prices dramatically, then why not delay it just a few more months and milk everything you can out of those previous devices first? It happens ALL the time, in every fast moving industry.
It's not like any of us have a better option that once taken would prevent us from dropping the cash on an i730 once it finally does come out.
I know, I suck, etc. But I'm sticking with a June release at the earliest.
Have any of you guys checked out the Motorola A780?
I've had a prerelease version for a while now (a friend of mine has contacts working for motorola in taipei)...
this phone is smaller than Treo, it's a flip phone PDA running on a custom linux kernel. 1.3MP camera... camera isn't great but is better than most... calendar, full featured phone suite, awesome reception, QVGA screen, very snappy response... it's a very slick phone... hasn't crashed once... ever! I'm just borrowing this phone right now, but I'm considering buying it instead of waiting for the I730. The only hardware this doesn't have is wifi, and a keyboard.
Here is what I have assessed so far from using it:
Pros:
1. very stable
2. great phone reception
3. full featured phone capabilities (full suite of call forwarding features)
4. great form factor
5. simple and uncluttered calendar/ day planner
6. great screen
7. bluetooth is very stable
8. good call volume
9. outstanding speakerphone
Cons:
1. Entry not as quick as with a full keyboard (ala treo) or with a digital keyboard (ala pocket pc).. even with the predictive input
2. Phone portion needs to be more intuitive
3. voice dial not very accurate
4. minimal software support (can't load pda books, finance software, gps software, local maps..etc)
5. no support for full suite of media files, only Real media files
6. no wifi
7. calendar and contact system need more features

VW dose not make money on selling phones. They make money on selling cell service. How do they do this? They do this by getting prople to come over to their party by providing the latest and greatest devices. They will get this phone out as fast as they can to become the biggest provider out there...

Well, 2/4 isn't bad . . . . VZ does NOT make money on phones, VZ does make money selling cell service, BUT they don't provide the latest and greatest devices and they may not get this phone out fast.
VZ could and should enhance their marketing by getting the latest and greatest devices onto the market, but they're so focussed on marketing their great network that they've overlooked the benefits of putting great devices out.
That said, VZ has no economic incentive I know of to delay the i730 . . . . . VZ makes money on cell service and not on selling phones, and if the i730 is a great phone and VZ already has the best network, putting the i730 out there as soon as possible and in the largest numbers possible ought to be a great market share and profit maximizing strategy for VZ.
If they're dragging their feet, a more likely issue would be phone availability - if there's a lot of pent-up demand and this is a super hot phone, VZ may need to wait until Samsung has ramped up production capacity or else the VZ service people will be swamped by a tidal wave of customers and potential customers wanting to get an i730.
It's an interesting handset design but not for me.
not CDMA
no support for 3rd party applications
